Epic Time Battle

Here is a little fun-fact. As of a few months ago, there were more cellphones than people in the United States.

Millions more, in fact. The trend is the same for all Western countries, but let’s take a look at the US numbers specifically…roughly 311,000,000 people and 328,000,000 cell phones (per wikipedia…take that for what it is.)

Guess what they all have in common? The ability to tell time. Sorry watchmakers…you are fighting a battle of epic proportions.

Fortunately for the watch guys, they have style on their side…like this good-looking piece:

daaaaaaang thats a nice seiko watch
all black everything

Seiko watches provide a great example, or counterpoint per se, of why watches are still as relevant as ever. A watch of this quality both works great and looks awesome. Win / Win.

Another great thing for the watchmakers’ collective arsenal is the fact that the consumer now has purchasing power on their sides. Online watch shops like BlueDial beat the brick and mortar shops on price… embarrassingly so for the most part. Case in point:

seiko
- 202

Free shipping to boot…free two day shipping in fact.

Unless you decide to go with a very fancy cell phone holster…thinking something colored with some bedazzled beads…you are likely to get better style points by going with the watch route. You’ll thank me later.

Seiko Solar Watches

I will fully admit that a product that includes ‘solar’ in its name already has my attention. One of my ‘hindsight being what it is’ items involves biting the bullet, being broke, and going full on physics mode after undergrad. Montana State has a great solar physics department…could have been super nerdy. Next level nerd-dom. I guess I’m sort of trapped in this level nerd-dom.

Still, solar perks up my ears. This product, then, already has my focus…

seiko solar watch
daaaang

That watch, my friends, is a genuine Seiko SNE177 Mens Watch Black Stainless Steel Solar Quartz Link Bracelet Black Dial watch. I have been checking out Seikos for a while, and really like the look of the Seiko Solar Watches. Very cool.

Bluedial has the Seiko SNE177 or a hundred and sixteen bucks (and some change) less than the retail value, which is a bonus. A bonus too would be the spec sheet to this device…good to 100m pressures and the whole works. Not too shabby.

The time fight between watches and cell phones is still in full force. Watches are going strong still, due in large part to units like the Seiko Solar line. Stylish and practical…the colloquial double threat.

I’ll keep you posted if I come across some geekier watch lines. Solar takes the early cake…

Time Wars…Watch vs Cell Phone

If you would have asked me a year ago if I thought there was a need to wear a watch, I would have told you no. More specifically, I would have told you, “why would a person purchase a watch, when it is pretty much a given that there is a cell phone in the pocket of said buyer?” I would have had a valid point.

Well, I can give you two reasons. Reason number one: fashion. Yawn. Not my style. Reason number two: cell phone might die. Yawn. My BlackBerry lasts forever.

Flash forward to right now…I wear a wedding ring and have a phone that lasts about four hours on a charge. I need a watch.

If I was to head out watch shopping right now, there is no doubt that I would buy a Invicta subaqua watch. Without a doubt, the coolest looking watch I have seen to date:

subaqua
black, silver; beautiful

In all honesty, that thing is sweet. I really dig black and silver…cite my SS as evidence. Clean, subtle, and sophisticated. Not to mention the whole sub-aqua thing. Pretty much can’t kill this thing.

So, if I am to make a move to be on time, where should I look to buy my beloved Invicta subaqua? Easy. Blue Dial. Check out this price.

bluedial
beat that

Two hundred, sixty seven…down from nearly nine hundo. Beat that, I dare you.

Hit that link, see for yourself. Great watches at greater prices…while you do that, I’m going to put my Droid 2 back on the flipping charger. It has been three hours.

Military Watch Technology

I spend all day staring at screens. Be them my work monitors, (also know as “the twin twenties”) or the hi def screen on my mobile phone, (Droid 2, also know as “the D2”) I have screens all over the place. When I get home, I have two large flat screen televisions and a bunch of laptop computers. Honestly, screens everywhere.

A side effect of swimming in screens is immediate access to the time. Work computer…time in the bottom left. Debian laptops? Time on the upper right. I have my netbook saving vertical space, so the time on that guy displays in the lower right. My droid spits out time all over the place…TVs are the same with the touch of one button. Everywhere I am, there it is.

Has technology rendered watches useless? No way. Watches are awesome.

There are a few different routes you could take with something like this. You could buy a stylish watch, or a watch that will serve a purpose of some sort. Or, you could grab something like this: (my new favorite, FWIW)

traser h3
watch this too

I am digging Military Watches right now…good engineering, nice style. Like the one pictured above. The Tracer H3 is a serious machine. MB-Microtec H3 Tritium Illumination. For sure. That is not messing around. I am very impressed by the 200 meter capability of this watch. Very cool.

Hit that link to see for yourself…that site has some awesome watches…good prices too.

Watch Time

It would be interesting to see how the market for watches has changed in the past decade. It is reasonable to assume that fewer people are buying watches now, with cellular phones in every pocket. We spend all day starting at glowing rectangles…in the corner of nearly all of those rectangles is a time display. Mobile devices have bridged the gap between finding the time at home, finding the time at work, and finding the time in the car. Pretty much everywhere now.

What do chronograph watches have that other time technologies do not? Style.

People don’t exactly dole out niceties about alarm clocks. Nice alarm clock, bro.

ice watches
???

Watches come in all sorts of stylistic styles…symbols of status symbol. I would be willing to bet that watch-wearing iPhone users are checking the iPhone for the time. Very willing.

That said, I stumble across some cool watches from time to time. I found this guy on BlueDial:

cool watch
heart

Pretty awesome. That is the niche that appeals to me…merging technology and style. It is great to serve a function, but serving the same function cooly is worth bonus points.

Every single time.
